SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY
The Sydney Dance Company has its origins in a company founded by dancer Suzanne Musitz. In the early 1970s, the company acquired a new name- The Dance Company of New South Wales. In 1976, 26 year old Australian choreographer, Graeme Murphy, was appointed as artistic director, alongside dancer Janet Vernon, as associate director. Together, they changed the face of Australian dance. Soon the company was recognised as one of Australia's most influential arts organisations. In 1979 it was re-christened as the Sydney Dance Company.
The Company tours regularly in Australia and all over the world. It has performed in 100 cities in 22 countries.
Its repertoire includes 26 full length productions. many of the works feature commissioned scores by Australian composers and several of the works from the current touring repertoire feature live music performances.

ZURICH BALLET

The Zurich Ballet has a history any ballet Company would be proud of . the first significant period came thanks to the Lithuanian-born British director, Nicholas Berizoff, who led the company from 1964 to 1971.
After Beriozoff, however,came an unsettled period with hasty changes of directorship. The French director Michel Descombey, was replaced by the British Geoffrey Cauley, who in turn was followed by the co-directing partnership of Hans Meister and Jorg Burth,both from Switzerland.
During this period nobody seemed to last for more than two or three seasons at the head of Zurich Ballet. In 1972 Rudolf Nureyev staged his ' Raymonda' for the company and later' Don Quixote" as well as his own" Manfred" . But it was only when the former New York City Ballet ballerina , Patricia Neary , took over as director in 1978 that the company was once again set on the right track. Neary stayed until 1985, by that time she had turned the Zurich Ballet into the most important Balanchine repertoire company in Europe.
From the mid eighties to the nineties two young choreographers unsuccessfully tried to lead the company. But ever since Heinz Spoerli became the director of the Zurich Ballet in 1996, the company has never looked back. Today, it is counted amongst the continent's leading ballet companies. Spoerli introduced his dancers to the very best choreography available on the international market as well as his own.
The majority of Spoerli's ballets performed by the Zurich Ballet have been created for them. their repertoire is extensive moving from classical to contemporary works.

The Paul Taylor Dance now in its 48th years, has performed Paul Taylor's works in over 60 counties and more than 450 cities. It has represented the United State at arts festivals in more than 40 counties and has toured extensively.
In June 1999 the Company launched a two year Cultural Capitals of the World Tours, which took it to Santiago, Cologne, Auckland , Macau,Jakarta, Paris , Frankfurt,Kingston, Santo Domingo ,Stockholm, Bergen ,Lyon, London, Rome , Montreal, Beijing and Shanghai ,among other cities.
In the summer of 2001 the company toured China and performed in six cities. In early 2003 it did a four-week, six-city tour of the United Kingdom.
Whether investing everyday movement with breathtaking beauty or unforgettable archetypes like " a desperate woman hungering for love at a dive in Buenos Aires... a fundamentalist preacher with a chequered past... and an ageing eccentric dancer performing a grotesque dance' , Paul Taylor has riveted audiences for 48 years.
Even today in his seventies , he's as prolific as ever. Time has hailed him as " the reigning master of modern dance" while Newsweek cals him " the world's greatest living choreographer" . Paul has set dance to Ragtime and reggae. tango and Tin Pan Alley; he has turned elevator music and novelty tunes into high art; and enjoys particularly choreographing to Johann Sebastian Bach.
President Clinton awarded Paul Taylor the National Medal of Arts in 1993. In 1993, he received an Emmy Award for Speaking in Tongues, produced by WNET/ New York the previous year. He was a recipient of the 1992 Kennedy Center Honours " for enhancing the lives of people around the world and enriching the culture of our nation," In 1995 he received the Arts. In1995 he was named one of 50 prominent
Americans honoured in recognition of their out standing achievement by the Library of Congress's Office of Scholarly Programs.
Taylor formed Taylor 2 in 1993, a company of six dancers who bring many of the choreographer's masterworks to smaller venues around the world. Taylor 2 also teachers the Taylor style in schools and workplaces and at community gatherings.
Paul Taylor was elected to knighthood by the French government as Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1969 and has since been elevated to the ranks of Officier ( 1984) and Commandeur ( 1990). In January 2000. He was awarded France's highest honour , the legion d'Honneur, for exceptional contributions to French culture. Other awards include the New York State Governor's Arts Award and the New York City Mayor's Award of Honour for Art and Culture.

Moscow State Classical Ballet

The Moscow State Classical Ballet is one of the leading ballet troupes in the world and has been in that positionfor more than 30 odd years. Their lead dancers have won 13 odd medals at differrent international competitions and three prizes at the Paris Academy of dance.

The company's repertoire extends to more than 20 ballets, both classical and modern representing various styles and trends. The Moscow State Classical Ballet came into existence as the USSR State Choeographic Company in 1966, established by the USSR Ministry of Cultrue to tour the Soviet Union and foreign countries showcasing Russian classical ballet in its traditional form.
After Vladimir Vasilyev and Natalya Kasatkina assumed the roles of art director and principal ballet master in 1977, they transformed the ballet company into the troupeit is today emerging from its earlier role as a concert company into that of a touring balet theatre
with a distinctly theatrical approach to traditional master pieces of Russian ballet and contemporary works. The Moscow State Classical Ballet has performed in over 30 countries around the world. The company has also earned laurels at important competitions and festivals worldwide.

Natalya Kasatkina and Vladimir Vasilyev first met at the Moscow Bolshoi. Recognising their mutual talent they soon teamed up and in fact have been dancing and choreographing
together since 1959. Their first production together presented them as innovators in the quest for new forms of choreography. Over 55 of their librettos have been staged in Russia and abroad ever since.
By the end of the seventies Kasatkina and Vasilyev found the need to produce more of their own work. And fortunately positionsof ballet master and art director of the Moscow State Classical Ballet became available. Their first task however, was to go about restoring heritage works such as Don Quixote, Giselle, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Their extraordinary creative relationship has enhanced the ballet repertoire of the troupe.

What is about Dance?
Dance is an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting.
Dance may also be regarded as a form of nonverbal communication between humans, and is also performed by other animals (bee dance, patterns of behaviour such as a mating dance). Gymnastics, figure skating and synchronized swimming are sports that incorporate dance, while martial arts kata are often compared to dances. Motion in ordinarily inanimate objects may also be described as dances (the leaves danced in the wind).
Definitions of what constitutes dance are dependent on social, cultural, aesthetic, artistic and moral constraints and range from functional movement (such as folk dance) to virtuoso techniques such as ballet. Dance can be participatory, social or performed for an audience. It can also be ceremonial, competitive or erotic. Dance movements may be without significance in themselves, such as in ballet or European folk dance, or have a gestural vocabulary/symbolic system as in many Asian dances. Dance can embody or express ideas, emotions or tell a story.
Dancing has evolved many styles. Breakdancing and Krumping are related to the hip hop culture. African dance is interpretive. Ballet, Ballroom, Waltz, and Tango are classical styles of dance while Square and the Electric Slide are forms of step dances.
Every dance, no matter what style, has something in common. It not only involves flexibility and body movement, but also physics. If the proper physics is not taken into consideration, injuries may occur.
Choreography is the art of creating dances. The person who creates (i.e., choreographs) a dance is known as the choreographer.
Ballet Dance
Ballet developed first in Italy and then in France from lavish court spectacles that combined music, drama, poetry, song, costumes and dance. Members of the court nobility took part as performers. During the reign of Louis XIV, himself a dancer, dance became more codified. Professional dancers began to take the place of court amateurs, and ballet masters were licensed by the French government.
The first ballet dance academy was the Académie Royale de Danse (Royal Dance Academy), opened in Paris in 1661. Shortly thereafter, the first institutionalized ballet troupe, associated with the Academy, was formed; this troupe began as an all-male ensemble but by 1681 opened to include women as well.
Ballet photography goes way back to the late 19th century and has preserved precious images of early ballerinas and premier danseurs. Going even earlier in ballet history, there are excellent drawings of ballet stars, ballet classes, and ballet masters.
It's fantastic that now we can view productions from ballet companies all around the world on DVD. For ballet fans who are not in a major city that is visited regularly by ballet companies, this is especially handy.
There is so much to look at, and how can we pick and choose what to learn from? Of course ballet is taught by a live ballet teacher, not from an ebook or DVD. But between classes there is opportunity to understand class lessons better, or study to figure out why certain ballet positions or movements may be difficult.
The Cecchetti method of ballet, the Royal Academy of Dancing and the Vaganova method are the three best known methods of teaching ballet. Most major full time professional ballet schools combine these styles, not necessarily by using all three grading systems, but by employing staff and guest teachers who have a well rounded training themselves.
The Auguste Bournonville choreographic tradition shows up a lot in the Cecchetti grades, as just one example of how classical choreography has become embedded in training.
If you are interested in starting ballet, find out what schools in your area teach a syllabus (grading) system, or if they do not, what is the background of the teachers. Retired professionals do not always teach from one of these three systems, yet can be excellent at teaching from their own training.
If you are training to dance simply for your own enjoyment, you may or may not like the pressure of ballet exams - yet, it is part of the discipline in most schools. Whatever your preference, check around and find the right school for you.
If you are taking ballet for weight loss and you are on the right diet, you won't be disappointed. Ballet classes burn a fair amount of calories, and also help build muscle. Since muscles burn calories all by themselves, even when you are sleeping, gaining muscle mass is very healthy.
Ballet is also good exercise for healthy bones as well.
Dance injuries are usually the result of sloppy technique or too much muscle tension. Work as accurately as you can, and if you are having trouble with a ballet position or movement, do not be shy. Ask for help. For one thing, repeatedly practicing a ballet movement incorrectly will lead to increased muscle tension.
If you are a curious student and want to know the ins and outs of the mechanics of ballet movements, and what would be anatomically correct, get one of the ballet books written on functional anatomy. It will help you sort out how to improve ballet positions and movements. Not everything in ballet is anatomically correct, and details about that is good for you to know.
Whatever ballet technique you choose to study, always enjoy the movements that you do more easily, get help with those that you struggle with, and take good care of yourself.
